About
Swimming the English Channel for Charity – Heart Foundation
In September 2013 I will be swimming from England to France a 34km stretch in chilly 16 degree water giving way to 100’s of ship liners and boats, swimming through England’s sewage.
I am a Wellingtonian born and raised. I have spent half my life swimming competitively and have excelled in Open water events. In 2008 at the age of 21, I swam the Cook Strait (26km) North to south in 4 hours and 37min and 56seconds, Breaking the existing north to south record by over 2hours and the fastest crossing record by 27min which was swum south to north.
I have struggled and faced obstacles in my swimming endeavours. At the age of 18 I was diagnosed with scoliosis, a lateral curvature of the spine. Luckily swimming keeps my spine flexible, mobile and strong otherwise it would need operating on. Just before my 21st birthday I was rushed to the hospital to find out that I have atrial fibrillation. They used the defibrillator on me to get my heart back in time. I am now on permanent medication to keep my heart stabilised.
The Goal for the English Channel is to be the Fastest of the year. If I am lucky with tide and weather I will also be in reach of the record time which stands at 6hours and 55min held by Trent Grimsey.
